A Tremendous Cost Paid By The Father

From a Film  - Title: Most

Main Idea: There Was A Tremendous Cost Paid By The Father

The father, who operates the drawbridge at the river, has finally given in to his young son's request to join him at work. However on that day, someone has made a major mistake and the train has arrived earlier than expected. In the world of the bridge, which operates with a clear set of specific rules, there has been violation. The son has been told to remain where he can be seen, but he knows how the world of the bridge works, and the mistake is instantly clear to him.

Application: What an amazing deep love that was between the Father and Son. What a price the Father paid to save the people, who never even thought of Him, and would perhaps, never even connect with their salvation. The Son is so pure and full of life and love. The mistake is so heavy. The choice is so devastating.
As much as this clip rips at our hearts, the story of our God is richer and more powerful. While this father was surprised by his situation, our Father asked His Son if He would volunteer to go down into that hole, because it was the only way to save us. In this clip, the Son slips and is unable to recover in time, but in our story, the Son allows Himself to be crushed for our iniquities and ridiculed by the very ones on the train who He is willing to die for. In this clip, the people were innocent of the mistake, but in our story, we are the ones who pulled the train from the station early…we made the mistake…we owe the debt. Yet the Father and Son still volunteer, out of love, to crawl into that dark place and die. However, there is one striking similarity. In both stories, the Father's heart was broken by love, His heart ripped by the consequences of the mistake. He paid a price He didn't owe for someone who owed a price they couldn't pay. He is our salvation and our very life. Thank you Father. Amen.

Correlating Scriptures:
John 3:16 (New International Version)  "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

1. Romans 5:6-8 (New International Version)  You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2. Ephesians 5:1-2 (New International Version)  Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Alternative Ideas:
1. The train was full of people who were not even aware of the sacrifice of the father. Gazing out of the windows, they completely missed the story unfolding in front of their eyes. For those of us who know what happened, don't we owe it to the rest of the train to tell them about the Father's sacrifice?

2. Only one person sees the father's heart breaking over the separation that has now become his pain. That girl, seeking a kind of transcendent moment with heroin, somehow sees the realm the other passengers never see. Her pain connects with his and she is lifted out of her addiction and into a new life. The love of the father and the price he was willing to pay for her life moved her to receive this gift and do something with it that mattered. We see her in the end of the film with her little son who only came about because of the father's love.
